Information Technology

Wodonga West Primary School has an extensive computer network. Students have access to computers in their own classrooms, in their specialist subject rooms and in our special purpose ICT Lab. Our computers are linked to our central server, giving all workstations access to software and CD ROMs, high speed internet and printers. As part of our New Basics Rich Tasks students are encouraged to learn and use real life technology skills to complete work requirements. They are encouraged to use digital cameras, videos, personal recording devices (MP3 players), netbooks, printers and scanners to enhance and record their learning. Students use a variety of software to create webpages, Wikis, Moodles and presentations to present their research findings and solutions to problems. They edit photos and videos and create computer animations, and can compose and record their own music. They use word processing and graphing software, and develop their literacy and numeracy skills with educational software. Students research using the Internet, and search for and borrow books from our school library via computer.

Information & Communication Technology Lab
In our ICT Lab we have 28 workstations, and it is also fitted with an interactive whiteboard. Classes are timetabled into the ICT Lab on a weekly basis, allowing for the teaching of specific ICT skills, and individual time to complete work requirements. Use of the interactive whiteboard allows for teacher demonstrations and explicit teaching of software and skills. Students also showcase their work and receive peer feedback and support.

Interactive Whiteboards

Our school values the research on Interactive Whiteboards as a teaching tool.  Consequently we were proud to announce that all classrooms have one of these exciting resources- large interactive screens connected to a computer workstation. Interactive whiteboards allow students to have hands-on participation in lessons. They allow teachers to use the multi-media, multi-sensory style that children experience with their computer games and televisions, and harness that interest for student learning. The technology allows teachers to capture material digitally from a variety of sources, and then compile it to create new and exciting, multi-media teaching materials that are relevant to the students and their learning needs. Of particular importance are the collaborative skills students develop when working together using the boards.

Library
At Wodonga West Primary we have a well equipped library which class teachers can visit for library sessions and it is utilised for research, especially in the older year levels. As well as a variety of fiction and non-fiction books there is a bank of computers for groups of students to use. The library is open for children to visit at lunch time and children from Prep to Year 6 have the opportunity to borrow daily if they wish.
